  2. From Kay Barnes yesterday - Helen...An update re: our tour of the PAC. I had lunch today with Joan Israelite,
the former head of the Arts Council and now actively involved in the fundraising
for the PAC. She's also the one who would take us on the tour. She's terrific,
and everyone will really enjoy her.

She is e-mailing to me the remaining slots open for tours in October and November.
Because of so much interior work now going on, the number of tours are being
reduced, and we might be combined with other people on our tour.

As soon as I hear from her about the options remaining, I'll let you know.

So, stay tuned hopefully we can do this in the next two months!

  4. I will send out a formal confirmation to all of you...BUT we are all set to tour the Performing Arts Center on November 3rd at 3:30. I will set up a dinner after the tour at Webster House. The date worked well! All but 2 of our group will be attending. ~Helen

  5. I am sure the tour will be wonderful. I hope the two of us (out of town...so sorry!) unable to come will get a full report! I feel we are on the beginning of a delightful journey.

  6. Sooooo
After the PAC tour was canceled and we substituted with a tour of the Gao Bros exhibit at Kemper, we have officially experienced art together! Our docent was adequate but the exhibit itself was quite interesting.
However... the conversation at Blue Koi was so amazing. I think that my buddies of the last 30 years will become buddies with one another. Each and every one of you are so dear to me!
So, now to officially blog. At our dinner table, we talked about everything from being Grandmother to Mother-of-the-Groom (MOG) or MIL(ie) mother-in-law. It was great conversation! Becky (a self-proclaimed non-cooking type!) shared a great recipe for a goat cheese appetizer with honey and sunflower seeds. She better post it!

All in all, great fun. We are working on our holiday gathering with spouses and talked about January and February gatherings.

    Have a blessed Thanksgiving! ~Helen

  7. Sooo - Becky and I are working on Holiday Gathering. The Sulgrave is booked all weekends for the month of December. We are looking at a Thursday night.
Also, one of our busy authors has two upcoming book signings in KC. Sally is probably too shy to send to us so I will!
I'm happy to announce that A Holiday Yarn (Seaside Knitting Mysteries #4) will be in bookstores and available online Tuesday, November 2, 2010.
Here's the scoop: "The holidays are a magical time in Sea Harbor, but when murder grips the New England town, the knitters must put aside their knitting to pursue justice and restore joy to the season and the town they love." Publisher's Weekly has nicely called it "engrossing" ... with an "unexpected ending." Hope you think so, too!

  8. I thought the Kemper tour was great. I took Lee and Macauley back over the weekend to see the Gao exhibit. They were interested because of our trip to China. Thanks for coordinating, Helen. I also enjoy our Blue Koi time -- fun to meet and get to know our members.

  9. Would have loved to be fly on the wall and hear all the conversation at the Blue Koi...will look forward to the Holiday gathering so I can officially feel a part of the group.

  10. Good back up plan, Helen. I too enjoyed the Kemper exhibit and look forward to going back to the Blue Koi for dinner. It was fun to learn that I knew Judy's father-in-law. I later saw the Kemper Crossroads exhibit. Liked the petticoats! I am thinking about going to hear Stan Herd talk about prairie art tomorrow at the Nerman Museum. May see some of you there. Thursday evening Christmas party sounds good to me.

  11. Hi all -
I am going to an "Art Tasting" tonight(Nov. 18) at the Nelson. The new director, Julian Zugazagoitia, will talk for an hour (6-7pm) with Jan Schall, the Modern and Contemporary curator. These "tastings" occur every month with a different curator and might work out well for us. We could attend one of the talks and then EAT and talk about the talk!! I know we have just had an art-y thing so maybe better to consider in the spring. Thursday, April 14 is American Art. I could even do a brief tour afterwards (before dinner)if you want. Just an idea.

  12. Barb, sorry I missed your last post. Although, I think I was in Texas.
But, wanted to update all of you on our exciting Holiday Gathering. Chef is working on the food details. I have figured out plates, silver and glasses and will search for table clothes to buy or rent today!
We will have great food and wine!
Judy Toalson and Karren Crouch are helping me set up and make flower arrangements on Thursday. Maybe I have become selfish over the years but this seems like Junior League with a good twist!

  14. Wanted to tell you that I spoke to Devon Himes, my friend and painter, whose spouse, Joscelyn, is a fabric / fashion designer who has worked with Bill Blass and Vera Wang and is currently working with Donna Karan. Her website is http://jhtextiles.com/section/7636.html
Devon says he's certain she would give us a tour of her studio in the Crossroads so we need to get this on our calendar, as well.

  15. Helen and Becky~You both out did yourselves in providing a masterpiece for our first holiday celebration~and one that will certainly be almost impossible to top in the future. The meal (feast) with appropriate wines was truly perfect~I've never seen such large portions of lobster mac and cheese devoured so fast! It was truly a magical night and I thank you for your efforts to make it so. I did get some good pictures that I will post here~as soon as I figure out how to! Thanks, and Merry Christmas, Judy

  18. Last night was super! Three of our very own members talked about their careers as authors. Another member, with some encouragement, revealed her family's history in the publishing world!
So, of these four women (Judy, Barb, Nancy, and Sally) can you guess which one:
    1) Was a Catholic Nun, who left the convent, married a Jewish man and began her writing career writing Romance Novels,
    2) Is the real "Jane" in the reading primers "Dick and Jane" because her father was the author,
    3) Began her career as a family therapist but only after publishing a recent book realized she had wrote a book that made "right" some of the things that hadn't been right in her deceased mother's child hood, or
    4) Began her career as a KC Star Journalist only to find that she was a terrible reporter (reported a vote at a City Council Meeting as a passed vote when it had, indeed, not passed!).

Guess away and have a great weekend! Helen
